David Paul was a lieutenant in the Prairie Rangers Company, which became Company K, 3rd (Harrison's) Louisiana Cavalry Regiment. He succeeded to command of the company after Captain Todd turned himself over to Union forces in April 1864, but I don't think he was ever promoted to the rank of captain. I've never heard of the company being referred to as Paul's Rangers.
