Paul's descendants may have assumed that he was promoted to the rank of captain since he was commanding the company after Todd's desertion. It is possible that the men began informally to call the company Paul's Rangers, but that was not its nickname when it was organized. It is pretty well documented that Paul and his men operated with some brutality against the Jayhawkers since the latter had done some killing and burning themselves. I had not heard the story about his burial but suspect there is a large measure of truth to it.
