The Patrick Gaughran of Strawbridge's 1st Inf. is said (according to Booth's records) to have enlisted in the 32nd Ind. Vols. on Sept. 23, 1863. However, there is no Union record of anyone in that unit with a name even close to this one. There is a possible match in the 12th Ind. Inf., however.

The next record in which he is mentioned, dated Dec. 31, 1863, states that he is "absent without leave; gone to Louisiana". Then, he is ordered to return as Deserter by Circular, Headquarters Meridian, Miss. dated Jan. 11, 1864. So apparantly, Mr. Booth got that he had enlisted in the 32nd Ind. inf. from someplace besides a muster roll notation as it does not seem that the regiment nor headquarters were aware of any "galvinization". But where?

The Patrick Geagan that I am researching supposedly was captured, along with his brother, during a raid on Louisville, Ky. [not necessarily *at* Louisville when captured.] They were both taken to Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. Patrick had lived there before the war, and both knew the commanding officer of the fort from their time in the gold fields of California. As the commander knew them, he paroled them, and sent them north to Montana for the duration. This is the story as told by Patrick's brother. He further stated that they were in the Louisiana artillery. They were both residents of New Orleans. The raid was for the purpose of taking a bronze cannon.

If the man who was paroled as a member of Squires' Louisiana Artillery Battalion was indeed my Patrick Geagan, then it contradicts the above story. That is why I am interested.

I have found that Squires' Louisiana Artillery Battalion was different than the Washington Artillery. Squires was transferred when he was promoted to Major. However, the only thing that I can find about his battalion was that the 1st La. Artillery Regulars were transferred to it. It would appear that the 1st La. Artillery Regulars was a different unit than Strawbridge's 1st La. Artillery.
