Consolidated Crescent Regment
In Response To: Re: Gray's Brigade @ Mansfield ()

I had always thought the CCR was composed of the 11th Bttn, 12th Bttn, and the 24th Regiment. But I'm probably wrong about that, or confused, which is a reoccuring problem these days!

I can tell you that the CCR, along with the rest of Gray's brigade, participated in a gallant charge that day at Mansfield. The CCR lost 7 color-bearers, and after the last one fell, Captain Fields (?, I think it was) the regiment pushed on without its colors.

As with all things Civil War, you can find different accounts of every action, but one reported that Gray began the attack with right at 1,000 men, and finished the day with barely 600 still standing. Now, most records indicate that Taylor lost about 1,000 men, in total, that entire day (three phases of the battle), so it appears that Gray's brigade made up 40% of the total losses.

Gray's brigade stepped off across that half-mile wide field into a storm of shot and steel, and except for a brief pause in a shallow depression, marched straight at the enemy, driving him from the field.

Charge of the Light Brigade - Louisiana style!
