mystery soldiers.....Camp Magruder, Minden, La

I would love to hear from anyone who has information about Camp Magruder which was located on the outskirts of Minden, Louisiana. The library there at Minden has very little information about it. I've been unable to locate further records of Camp Magruder and would love to hear from anyone who knows how and where to look.

I have been trying to locate info on what became of my gr gr grandfather William Warren Faulk. I'd like to place a military headstone for him and am hoping to determine where would be the better place to put it. The most likely place so far seems to be Camp Magruder. At the time of his enlistement, he was a resident of Jackson Parish.

I have William's military records which show that he enlisted in Co. H, 28th La Grays on Sept 13, 1862. I obtained a copy of the roster for Co H that show he was present for duty Aug 31, 1863. His military records show that he was also in Co. F, when he died, apparently on or around Nov. 21, 1864 but it didn't say how. His name was on a list sent to the Adjutant General. It gave a list of his effects....$13. So...when did he go to Co F ??? and is there a roster for them in 1864? Also, Booth's book doesn't have him listed....I suppose due to name mispellings. But at least I do have his military records.
His widow Mary was not living at the time when the pensions were established, so no help there.
From what I can tell, the Faulk name was mispelled several times in various records, so there is also another man who has often been mistaken for William Faulk.
From what I've been able to learn so far, according to my research...a part of the 28th was sent to Camden, Arkansas. In Oct, 1864 they traveled to Minden where they wintered there just on the outskirts and established a camp called Camp Magruder. Then January 26, 1865, they were ordered to march to Shreveport. But, while at Magruder, measles and smallpox broke out and several men died. These soldiers are buried in what is now the Old City Cemetery at Minden in unmarked graves. I'm hoping that more can be done to determine just who these men are who are buried there and perhaps at least a memorial stone put in place for them and also perhaps an historical marker placed for Camp Magruder as well.

So....my question is....does anyone have any knowledge of Co F, or Co H of the 28th Grays being in Camden, Arkansas and later Minden, La? A list of names would be really great. And...if my William Faulk was at Minden, and became sick....where is the most likely place that he would have been sent to a hospital if he went to one at all? As of now, I don't know if he was killed, wounded or died from illness.

Where could I get information, Adjutant General's records for November 1864, anything that would help determine if William Faulk was at Camp Magruder or what happened to him?

Thanks..any help greatly appreciated. You all have been so helpful in the past and this is such a great website...I just know I'll find answers here with all the great historians.

Kindest regards,

Penny Myers
