I have often seen reference to Civil War "teamsters". The guys who drove the wagons that hauled the supplies, wounded, ammunition, etc. Most references to them describe them as a cross between an uneducated, undisciplined, cursing mule skinner, and an unashamed coward who cut loose one of his draft animals and fled at the first hint of an enemy approach. Is there any good sources of information on this branch of the CW armies? I'm curious to know if they owned their own animals. Did they ever stand and fight? Where they part of a regular unit or where they an independent force within either army? How were they organized? Did they have rank? Officers?
