In Response To: John HOLLEY/HOLLY ()

Hi Hugh,

Thanks for the info. I sent an email to Gregg Davies (who contacted me) and I thought I'd just post it here also. Like I say in the email, I'm very interested in anything that has to do with the Holley's from Winn Parish in the Civil War. Below is my email to Gregg.

Hi Gregg,

Any info Edwin Holley and his son John Holley would be great. I have searched all the service records on footnote and have found some pretty interesting stuff, especially about John Holley being sent to prison for buying 8 yards of stolen military cloth during the war.

Records I have found are:

Edwin Holley - Capt. Peter's Co. 1st Regiment La. Scouts (Union) - Died at U.S. General Hospital at Alexandria, La. on April 19, 1864 of Typhoid Fever.

John Holley - Enlisted April 18, 1864 at Alexandria in Co. B 2nd Regiment La. Calvary (Union). Stated he was born in Monroe Co. Alabama (which is right for my John Holley), 23 years old (date is right also, he was born October 2, 1841). His brother William enlisted the same day and place.

On August 18, 1864 he wrote his first appeal (letter) to be released from the Parish Prison in New Orleans. On a appeal letter dated September 21, 1864 he states "I hope I do not appeal to you in vain but you will here my prayers and release me and you will do an act of kindness not only to me but to my helpless mother and two sisters who are depending on me for support". This comment kind of supports Edwin Holley, the father, dying on April 19, 1864.

On August 25, 1864 this unit was transferred to the 1st Reg. La. Calvary. John was present of the muster rolls from September on, so I guess he got released.

By 1870 this family had moved to McLennan Co. Texas where Edwin Holley's widow Mary was living alone with her children. This also supports Edwin dying earlier.

I would love to find more info about Edwin Holley's service.

Some people on the message board seem to think that the John Holly in Confederate Co C. 12th La. Infantry that went AWOL on July 16, 1863 might be the same John Holley as my ancestor, any way to prove this???

Anyway. I would love to know as much as possible about the Holley who fought in the war that were from Parish of Winn, Louisiana. I think is just fascinating.
