•Note: Judge Oliver John SEMMES was educated at Spring Hill College near Mobile, Ala., and in 1858 was appointed to U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y . During the Civil War he was appointed second lieutenant by C.S.A. President , Jefferson DAVIS, and assigned to duty as instructor of volunteers. He was placed in command of the Confederate gunboat, "Diana", and participated in battle of Camp Bisland in Bayou Teche in 1863. During transportation with other prisoners of war, they seized their boat and landed in Virginia where they made their way to Richmond to continue military service during the war. After the war, Oliver located in Mobile where he read law, served in Alabama legislature and was elected judge of city court which he held for forty-four years.
