Descriptive List [undated]

Joseph Hardy, Private, (2d) Company A, Daly's Battalion Texas Mounted Troops, enlisted March 20, 1864 at Calcasieu by S. T. Sewell, description on enlistment, 22 year old Farmer, hazel eyes, light hair, fair complexion, 5' 7", born in St. Mary County, La., resident of Calcasieu, remarks: Yellow Jacket Battalion

Letter attached to list shows: "Enrolling Office Calcasieu Parish, La., Charieston, August 11, 1864. Brig. Gen. Gray: I herewith send you a Descriptive List of a few men** of your command that have gone and joined the Co. of Capt. S. T. Seawell of Daly's Battalion at Sabine Pass. Clack's and Yellow Jacket Batt. and were all at home absent without leave from their said commands
W. W. Johnson, Capt. & En. Off. Calcasieu Parish, La.

.....

There are no company muster rolls available for this unit. The only serviving documents are three Regimental Returns, viz.

Regimental Returns

September 22, 1864, Sabine Pass, arrested as deserter by order from Dist. Head Quarters, and sent ______

October 16, 1864, Sabine, This man was ordered by Dist. Hd. Qrs. to join his old command in camps La. Brigade Infantry but has since returned to this B. for duty [Radsdale's Battalion Texas Cavalry]

November 22, 1864, Sabine, Transferred to his Original Command Yellow Jacket Batt'n

Note: He was in September listed as a deserter as he had been absent without leave for some time. However, the next month he appeared and in the next month transferred back to his to original command, the Yellow Jacket Battalion.

This would indicate that he was removed from the category, that as a deserter.

M323: Compiled Service Records of Confederate Soldiers Who Served in Organizations from the State of Texas

The reason he has no grave marker is that apparently no one has applied for a VA grave marker. The rules have changed recently in that only next of kin may apply.

I do not find records in his name in any other command including the Yellow Jackets.
