Jim:

Red River Landing was at the northern end of Pointe Coupee Parish near where the Red River emptied into the Mississippi River. The US Army Corps of Engineers maintains a river-monitoring gage at this point today.

According to Wikipedia, >>> In 1836, a post office was established at Red River Point in northern Pointe Coupee Parish. This area was once a major economic point and the transfer point for all immigration and mail. Before the advent of the railroads, daily stages ran from this community to Shreveport, Louisiana. However, after the old railroad bridge collapsed, the once thriving community began to decline steadily. In 1902, the post office was changed to Torras, after Joseph Torras, whose son-in-law, N. P. Phillips, founded the area." Source cited: Lockhart, John M. "Roadmap to the Westside", The Riverside Reader, January 21, 2008, p. 10. <<<

I was in the Baton Rouge area this past week visiting with family, but did not manage to get to the town of Torras to see what remains there today and to see if any historical markers existing commemorating the place name Red River Landing. Torras appears on my Louisiana State Highway map on State Route 15 near the Old River Lock Recreational Area. I am not sure how much of the river flows have been re-arranged by the Corps at this point, if any, to control flooding of the Red, Mississippi and Atchafalayla Rivers.

Hope this helps!
