Re: galvanized Yankees from Louisiana

Miles, I had no idea that such a book was written. One of my problems is that I do not read what other authors write because it might skew my line of thinking or research. I do read period items with enthusiasm. I know there are a lot of great authors among us and many fine books however I'd rather do research than read books. I do apologize if what I think is new turns out to be old.
That is interesting about 16 soldiers from the 10th Louisiana who were with the 3rd Maryland Cavalry as I only count 12 at this time. Do you have the book in question? If I were to supply you with the 12 names that I have located I'd like to know about the four others. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong, it would not be the first time.
Each galvanized organization was the same but different if that makes any sense from my research. For example at Camp Chase and the 11th Ohio Cavalry they put perhaps 40 former Confederates within two companies of that regiment. Some of their comrades were former prison guards at Camp Chase within the two companies. I thought that was a great idea especially if one of the former Confederatres deserted you would know what he looked like. The 3rd Maryland Cavalry however was so different as they formed entire companies out of the former Confederates with Union officers of course.
It looks to me as though perhaps as many as 80% or more would desert prior to being discharged in September 1865 at Vicksburg, Mississippi. A great number deserted at Camp Lockwood, near Baltimore in January 1864 prior to boarding the steamer for New Orleans. Even Captain Andrew J. Pemberton would resign perferring to stay in the Eastern theatre of war.
Both you and Terry are very knowledgeable and it's a pleasure to converse with both of you.
