In Response To: flags at appomattox ()

It was reported that the 10th Louisiana did surrender its flag at Appomattox, but not before a piece was cut off and given to Col. Eugene Waggaman. He later presented it to one of Robert E. Lee's daughter. Col. Edmund Pendleton hid on his body the flag of the 15th Louisiana and brought it home. These stories are footnoted in my book "Lee's Tigers" on p. 227. Upon rereading the page, I find that one of the stories surrounding the Tigers at Appomattox is incorrect. One source said that Col. Waggaman threw away his family sword before the surrender because he thought the officers' side arms would be taken, it but that apparently is not true. The sword currently is in the possession of one of Waggaman's descendants.
