Ken, thanks. I either misread the source or it was in error about the flag being surrendered. On a related note, several years ago I was asked to look at a scrap book kept by a family over many years. It included autographs of many Civil War figures, newspaper clippings, some letters, and quite a number of small bits of cloth/silk that were identified as pieces of various Confederate flags. I don't recall now which flags they were. It also did not say how the pieces came to be cut from the flags but at the time I wondered if just a few pieces were taken from them before they were surrendered or if the entire flag was cut up and distributed to the regiment's survivors. I wonder if that was a common practice.
