Henderson Chitwood was the son of Hugh and Jane Nichols Chitwood who moved to Reynolds County MO from Scott County [now Campbell] TN when Henderson was a child. I had information about his military service in the Civil War from "Descendants of Matthias Chitwood" but did not know in which unit he served. I was pretty sure he was in the CSA from information from my Grandmother; Henderson was her father. I have anecdotal information that he fought at Shiloh and also that he drew a pension. Since he was a Confederate these pension applications are more difficult to find than if he had been a Union soldier because they are usually retained at state level.

I found a list of Clardy's Battalion Missouri Cavalry CSA at the Missouri Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans [unfortunately I downloaded it without the URL].

Although Henderson is the first person listed there is no rank nor Company number with his name. I had been told that he was a 1st LT; several of the 9 men in this list preceding the company listings have no rank assigned.

When I looked at my database to pull info on Henderson I noted that his brother Jonathan was listed in the "Descendants of Matthis Chitwood" as J"While their children were small Jonathan enlisted in the Union Army, Company B, 9th MO State Militia and fought with this outfit until he contracted TB and was discharged". I am almost positive that the only Jonathan Chitwood in this part of MO at the
time of the Civil War was Henderson's brother. Not sure how to explain the discrepancy. I do know that the Chitwood book was partially assembled by soliciting input from descendants.

My original query was just to find out more about the Battalion, where they fought, anecdotal information,
etc. I hope someday that I can catch the database at the Military History Institute at Carlisle PA when it is
working but that has yet to happen.

Be glad to share any genealogical info I have on the family if there is interest.
