Jim,

I'm glad you are enjoying this. Some regard this as drudge work. Each to his own, I suppose.

You say that your "daughter went to the National Archvies." By that, do you mean she went to the NARA in Washington, D. C., or did she visit one of the field or district offices around the country? Private Hill's military service records should be kept in Washington, D. C., and the other offices would not have that much about his record.

The Missouri State Archives in Jefferson City (not St. Louis) should have some material about Private Hill, but how much, I don't know. I found his service card from Jeff City online and told you earlier what that said. How much more they have in Jeff I don't know. Since he served in the 4th Cavalry Missouri State Militia (not infantry--there was no 4th Infantry MSM), he was considered to be in a federalized unit and the NARA should have his military service record. All the MSM units were considered federalized because these were all active duty units, not part time units. Since the 4th Cav MSM was also a Missouri unit, Missouri also kept some of their own records. Missouri initially housed such records in the State Adjutant General's Office, but MO changed that a few years back and the Secretary of State's Office keeps them now in their building in Jeff City. Clear as mud, right?

It was against regulations to destroy any documentation about any soldier, and it still is against regulations to do so. This is not to say it wasn't done on rare occasions, however.

I wish you good hunting!

Bruce
