Re: Ambrose & Asa Davis Clinton Co.

Steve,

Chapter 11 "Spring 1862 in Northwest Missouri," pages 86-7 in "Guerrilla Warfare in Civil War Missouri, vol. 1, 1862":

"There was some violence in Clinton County that began near Plattsburg the morning of May 14 when some guerrillas, from ambush, shot a private of the 6th Cavalry MSM through the back as he rode by, killing him. The assailants then robbed the dead trooper's sole companion and escaped. 1st Lieutenant William Newby and a patrol of the same regiment were probably looking for retribution for this bushwhacking the night of May 19 when they arrested returned Rebel soldier Asa Davis near Cameron, northwest Clinton County. It seems Davis admitted to the short-tempered patrol that he had been hiding in the brush and knew of some guerrilla activities, and they soon killed him, allegedly while he was attempting to escape. The following day the dead southerner's father, Ambrose Davis of near Plattsburg, happened upon 1st Lieutenant Newby's patrol. He, too, spoke too freely for his own good, and he, too, died suspiciously. The patrol did eventually return to garrison with ten living prisoners who must have been more careful with their speech."

The source for this is the newspaper article on microfilm: "The Late Bushwhacking Murder at Cameron," "Missouri Statesman," Columbia, Boone County, 30 May 1862.

Well, that is two-thirds of it as best as I can do. Any questions?
