My great grandfather, Marshal Hamilton Williams, was a 20-year-old private in Cochran's 6-month Bollinger County V.M.M. His older brother served in Cochran's previous 6-mo. E.M.M. Back around 1950, my grandfather (M.H. Williams's son) wrote a fictional novel about "The Dallas Militia" that is based on what he must have been told/read about these units. My grandfather died in 1955, and the novel existed only as an extremely rough--albeit complete--first draft until I picked it up a couple of years ago upon my retirement (I was a business-press editor) and began editing it. I'm now in the process of trying to do a little research on the novel. It does seem to provide a pretty detailed look at the daily life of a militia company. Of course it's hard to know where the reality ends and the fiction begins. Anyway, I too, have been able to find precious little about these units--especially about Capt. John R. Cochran himself. I have heard about a narrative left by Albert J. Martin, who was a member of one of Cochran's units, which I am trying to locate. I'd be grateful for info anyone has about Cochran's units and how Dallas fared in the Civil War. Meanwhile, it was nice to see a note posted by another descendant of one of Cochran's units.
