Shelby (with Jeans, Elliott, Bledsoe and the guerrillas) routed the Union Missouri cavalry regiments on Muddy Fork at dawn that morning, near the Prairie Grove Church. The 1st Arkansas moved in that direction after the shooting started to see what was going on, and they were t-boned by MacDonald with Young, Crump and West's Battery. About the same time they were nearly overrun by the fleeing Missourians.
