SE MO Swamp

Picture of Ditch #1 circa 1909. Illustrative of the term swamp in Southeast Missouri during CW times. Ditch One runs southwesterly from about 5 miles south of Cape Girardeau bending due south just west of Oran Missouri to join the LRDD floodway west of present day Morehouse.

This is the kind of cypress and Oak swamp that covered 1.2 million acres of SE Missouri before the Little River was diverted to the Mississippi River and the swamp drained.

Gives new meaning to the term "Swamp Fox" and the difficulties crossing the terrain units would have had during the CW.
