John: Here's the link that shows non-anonimity of medical records circa 1860-70.

http://books.google.com/books?id=3jnSAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA427&lpg=PA427&dq=%22bertha+lerch%22&source=bl&ots=OyTGZoD-Wk&sig=VNftiC4kUMZLq9J9fpNtN1hXGrs&hl=en&ei=oTL8TP-ZG8GAlAfY3omNBQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CBMQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=%22bertha%20lerch%22&f=false

See Pages 427-428.

I failed to give Internet attribution specifically to Google's scanning of old documents in my previous post, and for that omission I apologize.

Bertha Lerch was the second daughter of my g-g-grandfather, a fact that was unknown to me until last year. There's more to the story than just that, and I am saving that for the article which I mentioned in a previous post.

And BTW, Bertha Lerch, age 4, was not, as the article in the link says, a German. She was an American and her father, a German immigrant, was a Union Volunteer.

I am still hoping to see another post from the lady who answered my rather-dated inquiry about Louis Raum, a Union Volunteer and later a Justice of the Peace in St. Louis.
