John: Many, many thanks for the history, which I consider absolutely fascinating because of personal interest. I had heard some of the history about draining the area several years ago while visiting Bloomfield. I just wish that I lived closer to do more research, but will seek whatever SE MO has to offer until I can return. My grandfather came from St. Louis sometime around 1919-20 to log in the vicinity of Heagy, which no longer exists, near Bell City. Don White and his staff in the Stoddard County Clerk's office were especially helpful several years ago when I visited. They referred me to the local historical society where I actually found mention of my grandfather's sawmill. I owe thanks also to the Scott County Clerk's office. As for more "on topic" CW history than post-CW logging in SE MO, I discovered a rather unusual coincidence in family history, as a result of ordering and studying my G-G-Grandfather's CW pension record, and doing further research in Jeff City, St. Louis City records, and on the Internet. I intend to write an article about it and hope that it might be published by a local historical society. Had medical records been confidential then, I could never have discovered the family history.
