Re: Did Union forces practice civic action?

Thank you again Mr.Nicols for your great reply. I didn't know that Union troops in Mo had to drag back slaves who wanted their freedom. Gen.Halleck has you know despised Kansas troops for what you described but the Kan troops seem to always have a "get out of jail free card" and has far has I have read whatever outrages they committed were forgiven by Union authorities. It is ironic that Gen Rosecrans upon learning of Prices intended invasion of Mo begged Gov.Carney for has many Kansas men in arms has he could get since the bulk of Union forces were tied up in VA under Grant GA under Sherman and if I am not mistaken Banks in La. It is indeed ironic that Union forces in Mo had to take time out to keep fellow Union forces in Kan from crossing state lines. I know of no other nation engaged in iregular war that had to keep part of its forces from participating in irregular war in specific areas. I understand that the 9th Kan conducted itself more profesional manner in Mo then its sister units.

Thanks Again,
Leonard
