If you could give us context it would help--date of document, nature of document, etc. etc.

I can tell you that there was an E.M. Sloan who was a bigwig in two Missouri fraternal organizations in the latter part of the 1800s. He was Grand Secretary of the Missouri Independent Order of Odd Fellows, as well as a founder of the Mississippi and Ohio River Pilot Society. Whether that E.M. Sloan is your E.M. Sloan is another matter....
