Thanks Bruce. This part of Moniteau and Cooper Counties is known as "sinkhole country." Today most of the areas surrounding the sinkholes have been cleared for farming, but the sinkholes themselves contain standing timber. A great many of these are obvious along Highway 179 between Jamestown and Interstate 70 at Overton-Wooldridge. There are also traditions of an incident near what is known as "Confederate Rock" which south of Rt W (Cooper County) and north of Rt. KK (Moniteau County). These are state roads connected by a stretch of gravel. It would be great to pin this incident to a more specific location.
