I think you are right about him being a guide more than a guerrilla. He served as a Captain at the Lexington Battle and his cousin, Margaret Hays wrote (Letter 42, 26 Sep 1862) that he was severely wounded in the right shoulder and would never have but little use of his arm. In Letter 48, 9 Apr 1863, Dick had little use of his arm and was still in the country (Jackson Co. area). Margaret wrote to her mother (Letter 58 7 Sep 1864) about his wounding at Arrow Rock and his death. He would have been at a disadvantage in a skirmish, especially if he was right handed.
