John and Tim,

Thank you for setting that in place for me, John. John has said it all. I know nothing specific for Scopus, but the immediate area saw almost continuous action by the men he mentioned during 1862, 1863, and 1864. Sam Hildebrand was from St. Francois and Jefferson Counties, but during the war he based in Greene County, AR and passed through Bollinger County frequently on his trips up and down southeast Missouri targeting men on his "kill list," and keeping southern hopes alive. This was also the heart of Pete Smith's and the Bolins' (Nathan and John F.) operations area, too. That doesn't include all the behind-Union-lines Confederate recruiters that operated here, particularly in 1862 and 1863. The Union side was represented, too, with actions by the active duty Missouri State Militia (MSM) and the part-time Enrolled Missouri Militia (EMM) and the citizen guards of 1864 and 1865. Some of those, especially's Cochrane's tough unit of locals, have been mentioned in this forum in past discussions.
