Bryce,

Do you mean the Newtonia battle on 6 October 1862 or the skirmish there on 30 October 1864? I don't have the Shelby book here to guide me.

If you mean during 1864: Captain John Thrailkill resumed his rank and position as captain or major in the Confederate forces in October 1864 when George Todd and Thrailkill joined their guerrillas to Price's army in Lafayette County. Therefore, Thrailkill was certainly with Price's army when it fought the Battle of Newtonia a few days later miles to the south in Newton County. As my source, I think General Price mentions the guerrillas joining his command in Lafayette County during October 1864 in his report, and there are other accounts stating that Todd and Thrailkill joined their bushwhackers to the regular Confederate forces at that time and place. This breach of the rules of war using guerrillas with regular troops was also brought out at Price's court martial later.

If you mean during 1862: I am not sure about Thrailkill being present during the 6 October 1862 battle there . Captain John Thrailkill was a Confederate officer at least by the spring of 1863, when he was named in dispatches for notable action with the rear guard during General Marmaduke's April 1863 raid in southeast Missouri, but I am not that familiar with his 1862 record.
