Bryce,

None of Thrailkill's men left memoirs to my knowledge. If anybody knows that one of them did write about their experiences under Thrailkill during 1864, please let me know.

George Todd and John Thrailkill joined their men specifically to Shelby's brigade, since they had connections to Shelby earlier in the war, and Shelby led his own local guerrilla band in the autumn of 1861 in northeast Lafayette County and northwest Saline County. General Shelby and the Quantrill men had mutual respect for each other based on many of them having served under fire with Shelby earlier. The names of a number of Quantrill and Todd men appear in the rosters of Shelby's "Iron Brigade," as confirmed for me by historian Terry Justice from his work on the personnel rosters of the Shelby men. Unfortunately, some of Todd's men continued their practice of "no quarter" after joining Shelby's regulars in actions along the Kansas border late the third week and early the fourth week of October 1864, which led to reprisal killings of about six of Shelby's men the Union troops captured, and perhaps some kind of exchange of messages between the Union and Confederate forces to this effect. This sudden development caused General Price to order all guerrillas expelled from his force. Since some of the guerrilas had dual status both as former Shelby members and guerrillas, a number of them remained with Price's force all the way back to Arkansas and afterwards. Many others did leave the Confederate force, though, as ordered.

I can dig up my sources of these points, if you need them. I am writing them in my own manuscript at this time.
