O'Neal - Foster-Johnson Co.

Does anyone know of a military action in Johnson county on March 17, 1864, in which two Guerrillas may have died?
The nearest I can find is a Federal campaign that started on the 20th. I think this was about the time Quantrill and party returned from Texas, but that's probably not relevant.
Noah O'Neal, age 47, and William P.(Perry) Foster, age 30, both died on 17 March 1864, probably in Johnson Co. (Foster was buried in Johnson)
They were neighbors, and both had a number of friends and relatives who were Bushwhackers. They lived near Rose Hill. The two men were not related, but they both died the same day and their estates were administrated on the same day a month later by the same people (relatives of Foster's wife).
I've found no military service record for William P. Foster.
Noah O'Neal:
McCowan's Rgt, Co C (CSA) Military Service Admitted to Hospital Aug 10, 1862, discharged Aug 26, 1862 MO
He was admitted to the hospital 10 Aug 1862 and furloughed 26 August 1862. Stated his residence as Rose Hill, MO.
.
Note: There was another, older, unrelated, William P. Foster in Johnson at the same time.
.
Perry Foster was my G-G-Grandfather's brother. I would really like to know how he died, and if he was a Guerrilla, perhaps with a small local group. If I knew of an engagement on that date, it might help to find more information.
Any help would be appreciated.
Jim
