R., (I can call your "R." can't I?),

I hope you were paying attention to my reply to Alan, because parts of it apply to "Skirmish: Clinton, Henry County, 9 July 1862" as cited in Fredierick Dyer's "A Compendium of the War of the Rebellion," vol. 2, p. 802, which also states the Union side [Dyer only entered the Union side of everything he wrote in his work] was Ist Iowa Cavalry, casualties: 1 killed, 2 wounded. Southern losses, if any, are not given. I am not certain, but I think Dyer is here referring to a skirmish elements of the 1st Iowa Cavalry had with Colonel Upton Hays' recruiting detail and/or his security detail composed of Quantrill's band of guerrillas. This took place near Wadesburg in northwest Henry County. Here again, the Union Army and Dyer said this took place at Clinton because this element of 1st Iowa Cavalry was then garrisoned at Clinton. Don't go looking for bullet holes around the courthouse.

After this small action, Colonel Hay's recruiting party separated from Quantrill's band and with a smaller guerrilla escort led by George Todd rode north to Jackson County to continue recruiting, and most of Quantrill's band led the Yanks off in another direction to ensure the safety of Hays vulverable recruing command. This led a day or two later to a greater fight in Cass County between most of Quantrill's band and a larger Federal force.

Did that answer your question? I am not at all sure there ever was much of a fight in Clinton itself, except by the patchwork defense force thrown together at the last minute in October 1864 when a part of General Price's army came close to town.
