Many of the headstones have been worn, replaced and restored. The accuracy of the data on the headstones is not good and we are working hard to ensure we correctly identify who is buried in the cemetery. With research we have discovered many names have been misspelled as well as regiments, states and company’s have proven to be wrong in about 20% of the cases... etc... With that said, there is one grave that we are puzzled about. The grave today says "J. M'Coy" However it is a newer headstone: In 1978 the older headstone read "J M'Coy Company D, 19th Missouri". We don't know from the headstones if they are artillery, infantry, etc... We can't find a Confederate 19th and there was a Union 19th that merged with the 3rd. There was a Private John W. McCoy in Union Co. D of the 19th (consolidated to the 3rd). Could this be another Union soldier in a confederate cemetery? Or was there a Confederate 19th Missouri that fought in Atlanta in the summer of 1864? Any guidance or help anyone can give us would be appreciated.
Thanks,
