Some years ago someone was writing a novel about the incident involving the Osage, wonder if it was ever published. Bartels has further information, I will check in with her. Bottom line is that Lewis was authorized in writing to raise a regiment in Western Missouri but failed, or he used that order to attempt to do more in Colorado. Raises interesting possibilities.
