Re: 46th Ark in Shelby's Division at Westport

Damon,

I see.

In the same vein, I examined the "O.R.," series 1, vol. 41, part 1, large section including much correspondence and reports of Price's Raid. Colonel J. W. Crabtree is mentioned only once in the detailed index of that volume, and that mention was made by a Union Major H. S. Greeno of the Union 4th Arkansas Cavalry (p. 917). There seems to be no mention of Crabtree in the Confederate reports, according to the index. On the other hand, Colonel W. O. Coleman is mentioned in this entire volume nine different times (pp. 28, 192, 431, 627, 675, 800, 801), the first two from before the Raid, and the others during the raid except the last for a mention of Coleman's actions after the raid. Several of these references to Coleman were complimentary by Confederate officers and General Shelby has positive comments about Coleman's actions or his command in several of these. This is by no means a scientific study of Coleman's or Crabtree's achievements during Price's raid, but the lack of mention of Crabtree and several positive remarks about Coleman seems to indicate something.
