The Missouri in the Civil War Message Board

Re: New Info Steamer "Pitcairn" Mar 65

Thanks, Bruce,
I will try to do some more looking. Nearly all the steamers by 1860 were "registered" on the official inspection lists either at St. Louis or Kansas City or other larger points on the river (usually registered at the boat's "home port"). IF the Pitcairn was a local freight boat or ferry, it might have slipped through the cracks. However, as I've noted in previous posts, ALL steamboats that continued in operation on the Missouri during the Civil War were required to be "authorized" by the Union warlords (pardon, but that is the least offensive term I can come up with at the moment!). In addition, each person who worked aboard a boat in any capacity was required to take the loyalty oath. I would doubt that there was any escape from this requirement. That leads me to believe that SOMEWHERE there is more info about this boat! The search is on!
Regards,
Maggie
