GAR Tombstones

The G.A.R., in 1897, furnished Martin Parmer Foster, a tombstone in Alliance City Cemetery (sometimes called Greenwood) in Alliance, Box Butte Co., Nebraska.
He was a Mexican War Veteran, but I've found no record that he was in either Army during the Civil War, although he definitely was friends with several members of Quantrill's Guerrillas.
I just found that the cemetery has him listed as a Confederate Veteran.
He lived in Cass and Johnson Counties, Mo. during the War.
Are there records anywhere on line on G.A.R. furnished stones and why they were furnished, hopefully with the Soldier's Unit?
