E. D, an update on James Harvey being at Centralia and buried in Jefferson Barracks. My Montgomery County historian just sent me a list of the some of the military graves in the Old City Cemetery at Mexico. It shows that a James Harvey was originally buried in plot 19 of the mass grave containing 34 dead from the Centralia Massacre. Incidentally Sgt Thomas Goodman is incorrectly identified as buried in plot 23. The seven from the 1st Iowa Cavalry were buried in plots 43 thru 49. Walt said the seven are identified by name but I don't have them yet. Walt also said that the Jefferson Barracks grave numbers are indicated on the cemetery chart he has showing the original graves of the soldiers when they were exhumed for transfer to Jefferson Barracks.
I'm sure curious about Thomas Goodman. I have to wonder if this couldn't have really been my great grand uncle James W Thomas instead. Perhaps James' remains had a bit of identification, ie partial name on undergarment, which was incorrectly attributed to being Sgt Thomas Goodman. From what I've read, bodies were badly mutilated, ie beheaded, chopped up with sabres, etc so heads may not have been associated with a torso. Attempts to ID may have relied on things like laundry marks in the remaining clothing.
