Rose Mary,

John N. Edwards in his book "Noted Guerrillas listed a Wade Morton who participated in the Lawrence Raid in August 1863. That's all I could find on Wade Morton, as ever other source used Edwards for that Wade Morton. Bear in mind that Quantrill had about 450 riders with him in the Lawrence raid, and about half of them never rode with him before or after that one. However, that qualifies all 450 to say "I rode with Quantrill," doesn't it?

I looked at every list I could think of and turned up a complete blank on an Andrew Jackson Morton, or an A. J. Morton, or even an A. Morton. I tried the 1860 census of about seven counties that all had men who were in Quantrill's band, and didn't even find such a name. I will admit that there were a number of Morton families in that region, and census takers had a hard time capturing info on young men who did not live at home. I'm not saying it didn't happen, but I'm just saying I couldn't find anything at all on this man.

See if the lady can give you any bio on this man. It would help to know where she thinks he was living, his parents' names, names of siblings. Where was the guy born? Where did he die? Did he change his name during or after the Civil War? Does the obit say anything about his early years before the war?

This could be one of those sad cases of another old Confederate who fought as a regular or irregular under somebody nobody heard of. I ran across cases like this. It got the old veteran some local respect to say "I rode with Quantrill," whether he did or not. Folks wouldn't pick on the old man as much thinking he was a "bad dude" in his day, and it might just get him some free drinks once in a while. I hope that is not the case, because nearly all vocal family lore contains some truth, and somebody believed it enough to write that in the man's obit.

Sorry I couldn't come through for the lady. I really tried. Not to say it isn't true. Just need some more information. She must have something, at least in the obituary. There are some sharp genealogy researchers that like hard cases like this one, but they need something to start with.
