Emory Foster's brothers

Came here to ask a question but think I have it sorted now. I was looking for a summary of Maj. Emory Foster's younger brothers during the ACW. Some Lone Jack accounts variously mention Melville or Morris. Emory's own Aug. 1, 1885 newspaper account indicates that his brother Morris served as aide-de-camp and was mortally wounded while retrieving severely wounded Emory from the guns. Actually, it says, "He died afterwards from the wound through the lung." It doesn't seem to indicate when.

Matthews and Lindberg's article on Lone Jack has the brother as Melville and killed in the battle. But Melville U. survived the war. I saw mention of him being in an 1870 MO census as well as an 1884 Missouri Supreme Court case (messy title on a land transfer from postwar period.) Looking at History of Johnson County he was quite active as a community leader postwar. Mellville U./Mell W/Melville N. are all used in the MO SOS database for the same person, from Home Guard through Co. A then G of the 7th MSM. Since Co. H (Capt. Slocum) was at Lone Jack and there was only one company of the outfit present, it seems unlikely that Melville, commander of Co. G was at Lone Jack.

Some biographical links I've seen online don't list "Morris" as a brother (but I'm not subscribing to any genealogical databases at this time so this is a cursory look.) However, he shows up as a private in company A in the Missouri SOS soldiers database, and per that eventually tranferred to 65th USCT as a 2nd Lt. and resigned May 26, 1865. 1860 Census of Johnson County shows a "C. Morris" aged 17. Found a family listing of "Caleb Morris Foster" that matches. Says he died in 1865 with ref to History of Johnson County that matches. This explains the somewhat vague wording by Emory of his brother eventually dying of the wound.

Emory's older brother Marshall M. was of course murdered by two secessionists in Feb. 1861 (before the start of the war) while attempting to vote for the constitutional convention referendum/delegates.

The Morris=Caleb Morris part fits Grover's 1920 Vol. 14 Mo. Hist. Rev. article about Emory. Hmmm, just found Lone Jack Historical Society has roster for Co. H of 7th MSM listing "Foster, Morris C" as Serg. Major. "Seriously wounded in action at Lone Jack while carrying his wounded
brother off the battlefield; Lost horse and equipment."

I'm posting this for corrections or in case others are compelled to ask the same questions that led me to this search.
