George and Red,

Emory's younger brother, Marsh Foster, was editor of the "Western Missourian" published in Warrensburg from 1857 until Marsh was shot to death in the county clerk's office. Marsh was assistant county clerk, and James McCown was county clerk. The two campaigned against each other, and subsequent to the 1860 election McCown was accused of shooting his former assistant to death in the clerk's office in early 1861, probably having something to do with their North/South politics. McCown was cleared of the crime in court, but thought it best to leave town, and he later led a Confederate brigade in the Vicksburg campaign, while some of the Union militia from that area burned McCown's house in spring 1862.

I also heard and/or read that daddy Foster was a chaplain in the Union military, but unsure of any details or verification.

Source: mostly from 1881 Johnson County history.
