Melville W/U Foster, age 20, Private, entered the service as a Private, Captain Houts’ Company, Missouri State Militia,** joined for duty and enrolled March 8, 1862 at Warrensburg, Mo. during the war in Missouri, elected Captain April 21, 1862, mustered out April 20, 1865 at Warrensburg, Mo.

Note: His file consists of 63 cards, is somewhat convoluted.

appointed Battalion Sergeant Major, wounded seriously at the Battle of Lone Jack August 16, 1862, hospitalized at Lexington, Mo., transferred to Georgetown, Mo. remaining absent through April 10 1863, mustered out as Sgt.Maj., no date, recorded present at the March/April, 1863 muster as Private, on detached service as Clerk at district head quarters November 1, promoted to 1st Lieutenant, Company G, December 23, 1863, transferred as 1st Lt. to Company H, 13th Mo. Vet Vol. Cav., discharged by Special Order No. 26, HQ Dist/Dept? of the Mo., January 27, 1864

Note: His file contains 24 cards. I do not find him in the 13th Cav.

** This organization subsequently became Company A, 7th Regiment Missouri State Militia Cavalry
