Re: The Western Sharpshooters Regt

I am replying to my own post of 2014 about my relative Ard Smith Stanton.
Some while back I located him in a roster, as having served in Company C, WSS, showing
he enlisted from Battle Creek. That was the closest city to his home in Assyria Township of
Barry County Michigan. I guess Company B may have been filled by the time he signed up?
He was listed as Arel S Stanton, no age given. He was 24. His unusual name was recorded wrongly
more often than right.

A family article says he enlisted with five friends, and was the only one to survive. I have attempted
to learn who they might have been, with some limited success.

Ard was described in family notes as an Abolitionist, indicating he was fighting out of conviction.
I do not have information about what he did after being discharged for disability in 1862 and when he
signed up during the recruiting drive for the 6th Michigan Cavalry in 1864. Presumably he was
back home.
