No record has been found in this office of an organization know as Company A Pinnells [sic] Battalion of Sharpshooters, CSA nor has any record of service, capture or parole of a man named J M Downing of Company A, 9th Battalion (Pindall's) Missouri Sharpshooters, CSA. The Confederate records do show however, that one James Downing, private of the last named organization, enlisted August 15, 1862, at West Plains, and on an undated muster roll on file, he was reported absent; left sick on march between Ft Smith and Lewisburgh. He is shown to have deserted December 27, 1863 at Camp Mazard. The Union prisoner of war records show the said Downing was surrendered at New Orleans, La., on May 26,1865 and paroled at Shreveport, La., on June 7, 1865."
