Thanks, John, for all the interesting info about Walley. I suspect he considered himself very lucky that the Younger brothers were pretty much otherwise occupied or incarcerated after the war.
I too was surprised that Walley got his pension just based on service in the Home Guards, but they were considered Federal units, I believe, having been called up by Union generals, not the state.
With regard to the 9th Kansas Infantry, Roger Hunt in Colonels in Blue has this notation about the regiment: "designation of regiment changed to 2nd KS Cavalry upon consolidation with reorganized 2nd KS Infantry, March 27, 1862." Does that make sense?
