See, the John Rider that Ermon married was the brother of Quantrill guerrilla and leader of his own guerrilla band, Mart Rider. Her husband was also the 1st cousin once removed of Quantrill guerrilla, John Winard Rider and his great uncle is John Winard's father, Quantrill guerrilla, George Rider.

So she knew a lot about the guerrillas and I doubt John Shepherd would've had to hide much from her or cover things.
