After researching several other sources it appears from an item in the Collections of the Kansas State Historical Society from 1918 that there is an article written by William A. Lyman called “Origin of the Name ‘Jayhawker’ and How it Came to be Applied to the People of Kansas”. In footnote #4 on page 204 it describes how both Charles Doy and Henry Waffle, who had ridden with James Montgomery’s free state militia had been kicked out of the force and become free booters and villains. So despite the laudable efforts which Charles Doy had engaged in apparently he had come under the influence of Henry Waffle and became a nuisance to the settlers of Linn County. One of the articles cites a J.W. Babb. From “Linn County, Kansas:A History” (1928) by William A. Miller this person was Joseph Waddell Babb (b. 1817) who was born in Ohio, lived in Indiana and whose wife was from New York. He came to Kansas in 1858. According to Miller Babb was a target of Missouri “bushwhackers” who “placed a good price on his head and was frequently shot at.” So Babb’s credibility as a free state man seems unimpeachable.
