Aha, I think you are now much closer to the truth. After writing the opening post in this thread back in 2012, I found what I consider to the definitive account of the affair, “The Recent Tragedy in Linn County, A Statement of the Circumstances connected with, and the Causes leading to the Killing of Doy and Waffle” (The Lawrence Republican; Lawrence, Kansas. August 2, 1860), which is undoubtedly written from the Free State perspective. It seems pretty clear that Charles Doy was hunted down and shot by his free-state neighbors in 1860 when, despite his previous assurances to steal only from pro-slavery men, his jayhawking became too indiscriminate.
