In Response To: Vicksburg Prisoner Exchange ()

My experiences may be different from other researchers'. I have never found a list of exchanged prisoners where the prisoners are named individually. You seem to have his military service records; if they simply state that he was exchanged at a certain place and time, that's probably all you'll ever find. The exchange notices that I've seen usually just say something like: "All soldiers captured at Vicksburg and Port Hudson are declared exchanged."

The exchanged prisoners were usually off-loaded directly at Vicksburg, from what I can gather.

As part of my own research, I've seen a lot of Vicksburg newspapers, but I've never seen a list in them of individual exchanged prisoners. Others may have had different results.

I think that, if he died in service, his CMSR would ordinarily show that, even if it was in a hospital. Usually, the CMSR shows hospital admissions.

Sorry that I don't have more to offer, but records from 140+ years ago are scarce, and often the info we most seek simply doesn't exist.

On the other hand, Lauderdale County Historical Society (I think that's their name) has an archive which has published a number of booklets on Confederate hospitals. I have never personally perused their publications. It might be worth your while to contact them and see what sort of pubs they have regarding MS CS hospital admissions. They are located in Meridian; I have no other contact info on them. -- Jim Huffman, Gainesville Vols
