Re: Chalmers' Brigade at Shiloh
In Response To: Chalmers' Brigade at Shiloh ()

Alan I would post a reply on the Illinois Board, but I can't determine which message requested the information. Interestingly Chalmer's after action report does mention federal units engaged. I have a complete section on the battle in my unpublished regimental history of the 7th Mississippi, but do not have any direct mentions of the 55th or 54th Ill. The only regiments mentioned are the 28th Illinois, 18th Wisconsin, 14th Iowa and the 18th Missouri.

As to the action at the Russell House on the 17th, I find nothing. I do find information about the skirmish on the 28-29th on the Monterey Rd near the Russell House. Chalmers Brigade [5th, 7th, 9th and 10th Mississippi] was involved with the 29th Miss. attached and supported by Wheeler's 19th, 25th and 26th Alabama.

Chalmer's Brigade was posted at this location on the line on the Monterey Rd for some time. The 5th and 7th Miss were reported as surrounded and captured on April 24th, a rumor that proved unfounded.

It is therefore possible that the man wounded on the 17th could have been involved a fight with men of Chalmer's Brigade.
