Re: Irish Mississippians
In Response To: Irish Mississippians ()

While not a man of major import, my g-g-grandfather John Cooper Dunn, an immigrant from Ireland, served with the 7th Mississippi Infantry, Company D for at least a short period of time.

Notes from family history:

John Cooper Dunn, on July 4, 1861, enlisted at the age of 40 for one year as a private in Company D (Amite Rifles), 7th Mississippi Infantry. Appears on a list of men mustered into service of the state of Missisippi as members of the Amite Rifles on July 4, 1861. No other records.

John Cooper Dunn was born in 1820 and died February 15, 1906. He came to the United States from Belfast, Ireland and settled close to Enterprise, Mississippi at Dunn's Falls. He had a mill and also made beaver hats. After the war, JCD burned several barrels of Confederate money. He had, for a while, an apprentice hat maker by the name of Stetson (anyone remember Stetson hats?).

[Dunn's Falls is now a state park.]
