In Response To: Irish Mississippians ()

The 1860 census for Jasper County lists 89 foreign born residents, not just Irish. Shannon was 35 years old and was born in MS, but his father in Ireland. The father must have been in MS by 1825. Other nationalities in the county included: English, German, French, and Hungarian (1), although the Irish outnumbered them combined. Most of the Irish in 1860 lived in an area of Jasper County served by the Claiborne (not to be confused with Claiborne County, MS) post office. I will later check muster rolls and see if I can ascertain how many Irish - either born in Ireland or first-generation born American - were in the Greys. (Since the original company muster used the "e" spelling of Greys, I'm sticking with it.)
